The Magellan Project – Wave Powered Circumnavigation of the Earth
On August 10, 2012 the Foundation plans to launch 5 Wave Gliders from Seville, Spain on the anniversary of the start of Magellan’s famous voyage. The vehicles will each be named after the 5 vessels of Magellan and follow their exact route from Spain: through the Canary Islands, down the west coast of Africa, across to Rio de Janeiro, through the Straights of Magellan, up the coast of Chile, across to the Philippines, around the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Spain. The Wave Gliders will be equipped with broadband satellite communications, cameras, interactive scientific instruments operable via internet links, and hydrophones to monitor ocean sounds. Also, assuming appropriate partnerships can be arranged, educational collaborations with various countries are envisioned. This project is in the planning stage.
