Humpbacks of Angoon
(running time approx. 20 minutes)

In contrast to the famous, elaborate songs of the Humpback during wintering in Hawaii, the short calls these whales produce in Alaska during feeding season have rarely been documented. These dramatic sounds are likely associated with group hunting behavior.

In the summer of 2005, The Jupiter team traveled to the tiny town of Angoon in Southeastern Alaska to attempt to capture these sounds.  Here is the story of our expedition.

LIVE WHALE AUDIO:

Puako, Hawaii 2011/2012

We are now streaming LIVE! We will continue streaming the Humpback Whale Songs well into springtime.

Please be patient, as we have a lot of new technology in place and are working hard to improve the consistency and quality of the audio. You may notice the sounds cutting in and out at times, but the whales are now consistently in listening range, and we invite you to stick with us as we solve and evolve.

We hope you'll enjoy listening! Keep in touch, and let us know what you think. Aloha.

About the Humpbacks

When the whales arrive in Hawaii  in late Fall they come to mate, give birth and nurse their young until they are strong enough for the 2500 - 3000 mile journey north to Alaska in early Spring.
