Humpbacks of Angoon
(running time approx. 20 minutes)

In contrast to the famous, elaborate songs of the Humpback during wintering in Hawaii, the short calls these whales produce in Alaska during feeding season have rarely been documented. These dramatic sounds are likely associated with group hunting behavior.

In the summer of 2005, The Jupiter team traveled to the tiny town of Angoon in Southeastern Alaska to attempt to capture these sounds.  Here is the story of our expedition.

The whales are migrating north toward their summer feeding grounds now. They arrived in Hawaii around thanksgiving last year, and we look forward to their return this next winter...

While we had more technical maintenance issues this year than we would have hoped, still we managed to keep the audiostream going for most of these last 4 months or so, and hope that you have enjoyed listening to the whales as much as we have.

Keep in touch, and let us know what you think.

About the Humpbacks

When the whales arrive in Hawaii  in late Fall they come to mate, give birth and nurse their young until they are strong enough for the 2500 - 3000 mile journey north to Alaska in early Spring.
