Jupiter Research Foundation - Humpback Whale Research - Live whale sounds using sonobuoy technology

Jupiter Research Foundation

The Jupiter Research Foundation, established in 2003, is a privately funded non-profit foundation dedicated to developing and applying new technologies for monitoring and understanding the natural world.

The Humpback Whale Project is our first project.

The core of this project has been the design, development and deployment of customized buoys ("sonobuoys"). These buoys are capable of detecting and broadcasting the sounds and songs of Humpback whales live onto the internet. These sounds are then available to scientists and the general public for study and for enjoyment.

The sonobuoys monitor not only whale sounds, but also time, temperature, and latitude/longitude using the Global Positioning System (GPS).

If you'd like to contact us regarding this project, please email whales@jupiterfoundation.org.
